Overview

The British Empire in Colour is a major three part series that examines the history and experience of the British Empire, form the perspectives of both the rulers and the ruled. Using original colour archive film - much of which had never previously been seen - together with personal letters and diary extracts helping to capture the many complexities and contradictions of life in the British Empire.

Rare archive footage from the days of the British Empire, focusing on the beginning of its dismantlement. Featuring news of communist insurgency in Malaya, the Suez crisis and uprisings across colonial Africa.

S01E03 Legacy

September 29, 2002
As Queen Elizabeth II is crowned, Britain is changing. People emigrate in droves to escape post-war hardship, while West Indian immigrants arrive in search of a better life.
